Ashwin-Jadeja Sparkle in Epic Rearguard, Leave Bangladesh Reeling

India ended Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh on a commanding 339 for 6, thanks to an unbeaten 195-run stand between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. After being reduced to a precarious 144 for 6, the experienced duo took charge, with Ashwin smashing his sixth Test century and Jadeja remaining just 14 runs shy of a ton on 86*.

Bangladesh initially had the upper hand after opting to bowl first on a green-tinged Chennai pitch, with Hasan Mahmud (4-58) wreaking havoc on India’s top order. His sharp seam movement dismissed key batters, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, leaving India reeling at 34 for 3.

Despite brief resistance from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a composed 56, Bangladesh’s bowlers continued to apply pressure. However, once Ashwin and Jadeja began counter-attacking, the momentum shifted dramatically. Ashwin, celebrating his 38th birthday two days earlier, delighted the Chennai crowd with masterful stroke play, while Jadeja’s gritty innings added weight to the partnership.

As the pair dug in, Bangladesh’s earlier control crumbled, setting up a fascinating Day 2 as India looks to build on their dominant position.
